The Perilous Wood

It's not often that I end up finishing an illustration differently from the initial commission, but it's starting to happen more and more frequently.
While I can't bear the thought of actually going back to an old piece and fixing or changing it (better to do a new version), every now and then a commissiion calls for what is basically an unfinished painting. In this case, the main cover image is separate, and composited in a great blank hole on the right-hand side of the background image - a full wraparound illustration. Once everything was scanned and sent off, there was still this great blank spot, so I filled it in with a few mossy trunks, and the trophy tree, adorned with the shields of vanquished warriors and knights.
This image is directly inspired by the film shoot in Canada last autumn.
As the saying goes, you can never go back, but you can paint pictures of it...
The version used for the book is here.
