The Lord of the Rings boxed set - France (2002)
The Lord of the Rings boxed set
Editions Pocket, Paris
2002
This is actually quite a nice boxed set, despite Pocket's ongoing mania with silver backgrounds. Unfortunately, the books inside the box are an earlier edition, with covers by another illustrator. When I first saw these in the bookshops, I thought, oh felicitous but inattentive editor, thy faithful but distracted bookbinder hath an error made, I will write forthwith and draw attention to the matter.
The editor assured me that it was only a few isolated sets due to a warehouse error. Then I saw other sets, and more sets, and finally it sunk in that EVERY set I saw (a lot of these in the hands of people who stood in line a couple of hours to have me say "I can't sign those, but maybe the box...") was exactly the same. So I called back of course, and got the same story (of course). (If the other leg had bells on it, I'd be a carillion.) Even the complimentary copy I got had the other guy's covers inside!
Okay, so it's a sly way to get rid of a lot of old stock, but still... Talk about cheek.
