Since the main cover image was intended to be slotted into a background, it made sense to do it separately.
Authors are like movie stars - once they make it above the title, their names take up masses of room. Robin Hobb's books require BIG skies...
This is the cover brief, by the way:
"John Howe as artist.
Tree border to bleed into the front cover from the left side, covering the spine and back cover. Front cover image, a grassland background impaled by a cavalry sword. Details to come from author.
Same signature Hobb typography."
That's why it's called a "brief" boys and girls...
But, the author supplied me with a few chapters and masses of information, and I dug out pictures of Drumheller hoodoos and unearthed all my books on cavalry sabres, raced outside and took photos of the ivy on the house (that's why it's allowed to grow there, you never know when it might be needed) and stuck all that together and there you are.
