Grendel
Another illustration that sort of spontaneously took shape. Having wondered for ages how I could take a legitimate stab at depicting one of Iceland's most beautiful waterfalls, it finally appeared that Grendel would be the perfect pretext.
Everything on the left-hand side of the image was done in the very first in wash. When lucky accidents like that occur, it is best not to try to rework them.
One of the more exciting things about Beowulf is that it takes place in a largely mythical Denmark, more an embodiment of the Norse universe than an actual geography.
While the waterfall is in Iceland, Grendel's little collection of skulls is not in the text, but seemed most appropriate for a creature that happily devours Vikings for dinner.
