When my agent called with the commission to do a painting set in the Pacific Northwest, I was overjoyed. A chance to draw something I grew up with, this is going to be really fun... it turned out to be a nightmare.
The raven was of course no problem, but the totems... No way on earth to turn up photographs of Haida poles in Neuchâtel, not a book in any library, nothing in the shops as far as Lausanne or Bern - it was awful.
I finally got lucky at the Museum of Ethnology, where I stumbled on what I needed.
I've since acquired lots of books on totems, but will I ever need to draw the things again? Better safe than sorry...
