Fool's Errand, by Robin Hobb, HarperCollins Voyager, 2001 During the incredible episode where Fitz and his protegé the Prince Dutiful are catapaulted to the unknown beach from the Stone, they meet this incredible creature, whose shrines of tiny stauettes riddle the surrounding cliffs. It is such an eerie episode that depicting the creature - or trying to - seemed irresistable. The head is of a 30-lb. ling cod caught by my father in the Gulf Islands, British Columbia, and while the rest is of the realm of invention, I did scour up all the pictures of large sea mammals I could find. The landscape is also from the Gulf Islands, and the layout a concession to the masses of copy that always grace back covers.
