Whenever I need reminding of the intrinsic value of editors, I remember this sketch. (Actually, to be truthful, I had totally forgotten this sketch, until it leapt out of a drawer like a slap in the face...) This was the first version of an idea for the cover of the Hobbit that I sent to HarperCollins. How embarassing. It was rightly turned down flat (see the notes in the margin, the result of a probably pretty terse phone conversation) with the editor certainly wondering if this Howe fellow was really the right guy for the job and me gritting my teeth and biting my tongue. So how about Smaug the editor suggested. Well, anything to please ! Thank goodness for editors; this would probably have been not only my first Tolkien cover, but my last as well.
