Originally done for the poster of the first Tolkien exhibition in Saint-Herblain, near Nantes, in November 1995. The mediatheque had a rather unusual format for their posters, which explains the dimensions of the illustration. Actually, I had already done a sketch or two of the exact same scene for Morgoth's Ring, which came out of the reject drawer as soon as I had the opportunty to do this painting.
