WOW, is all I can say!!! I bought a copy of fantasy art workshop at the weta cave in Wellington, just had to flip through it and realized that this is exactly how I want to paint. Never tried watercolour before and just finished my first painting. Thank you for opening my eyes to other ways of painting. I am very proud of my first and happy I found the appropriate medium to my visions. You are an inspiration to all that imagine with their heart and look beyond the norm. Again thanks, love and bless.

My partner and I came to see you today in Wellington. Whilst others bought your new books to sign, you were sweet enough to sign our very battered and much read copy of The Mad Ship, which meant a lot to the both of us. We brought this book as it is our favourite of your peices, even before we learned the forground is actually part of Wellington harbour. We are thrilled with your original sketch of Althea and you put two fans so much at ease that we didn't realise till later how silly it sounded having you sign the book to our cat. It was a pleasure to meet you & you've inspired the both of us to get our own sketch pads out again. We'll be watching to see when your posters wil be available again & look forward to seeing your work in sculptures. Thank you again & all the best. Taby & Carrot

Most of your Lord of the Rings artwork are among my favorite pieces. Glorfindel vs. Balrog and Fingolfin vs. Morgoth being my top two.

Thank you!

Gilakasla, (greetings)
I want to say "thank you" for your workshop books. I've been reading and re-reading them and they've helped me overcome some old roadblocks.

All the best of all the best to you.

I've seen a fair bit of John Howe's amazing artwork from Lord of the Rings(book and movie). But I've just realised that he did some of the illustrations for some Magic: The Gathering cards-one of my favourite games! What a legend 😀

I just wanted to say how much I admire John's artworks, I don't see them just as drawings but rather as frames opened on parallel worlds of dreams, fantasy and mysteries; unfortunately, I never managed to find a Lord of The Rings Trilogy's release illustrated by him, in France, I mean.
One more thing; will J.Howe work with Guillermo del Toro on "The Hobbit" movie?

Your artwork is breathtaking to the imagination.

Hello. I love all of your work. It gives me a guide through and around Middle Earth. So inspiring! I was wondering where I can find the artwork you did in The Return of the King credits. The ones with each actor's name with their picture beside it. Thanks!

Hello!
I'm so glad I finally found your site. When I was 11 and received the Silmarillion, I saw your art and was truly inspired. Because of you, I was given the drive to become an artist and to struggle to improve to one day be as good as you are. If possible, you're more of an inspiration than ever before - perhaps now I'm just better able to appreciate it.

For the last several months, I have been sending your artwork as e-cards to a dear friend (nicknamed Pippin) who has needed some encouragement. Thank you for making it available for such uses! It has blessed us both.
As an artist and Tolkien devotee, I enjoy your work. I especially love the sense of motion so many of your paintings have, like the one of Sam and Shelob and the ubiquitous but deservedly so one of Gandalf and the Balrog.

I hope to one day make it as big as you. You are a very admirable person, even though I have not seen you face-to-face. Thank you for publishing your lovely book and website 🙂

Hi,
I must say this is probably one of the most USEFUL websites around, especially the forum.
My first copy of LOTR had John's illustrations on the covers and since then I've been hooked on his artwork -
the way it just kicks your imagination's butt and you just cannot see the Nazgul or Gandalf any other way...
Thanks!! 😉

This time I just wanted to come by and leave a couple comments, so I chose to leave them in the guestbook:

First: I loved Lost Worlds. It was great, as is your custom. 😉

Second: Your eulogy for Holdstock was beautiful, quite touching. I have never read anything by him, but now I know I'll have to give it try.

I've been looking through your portfolio and it's now reached 6am with no sleep. I stumble across your image of Merlin and it blows me away, truely a masterpiece. admittedly i think to myself 'if only' but at the same time your work inspires me to become better. Thank you
