Hello Mr. Howe,

Just wanted to say how amazing your work is. I have really been looking in depth at your drawings, and they are visually stunning. Rivendell - architectural elements (http://www.john-howe.com/portfolio/gallery/details.php?image_id=2181) just blows my mind! It is so rich.

I just had one question if you would have time to answer. When you are going to draw something do you see all of the details in your mind's eye, or does it evolve on paper? The reason I ask is that I always tend to run into the same wall. I am wondering how much is just God-given talent.

Thanks again for your incredible efforts on The Lord of the Rings. I have watched the making so many times now, and the depth of talent is staggering. Thank you.

Regards,

Dan 🙂

Dear John
I think your art work is absolutely beautiful, and i first found it on the covers of my ALL-TIME favourite books, written by Robin Hobb. The characters you drew captured my imagination, leading me to do some (not brilliant) sketches of my own. I am also hoping with baited breath for a few more sketches of Beloved??? *hint hint* 😀

Fabulous work, keep on drawing!

May the stars watch over you,
Joanna,

Hey John, always liked your artwork, and at the expense of stirring up dirt I've thought your vision of Tolkien's tales way more spot-on than Alan Lee's. (I really would have preferred you had a lot more influence in the movies than he did.)

Anyway, this has to do with a correction. You keep referring to the worm "Glaurung" as "Glaurund." Sorry... rabid Tolkien fan pointing out mistakes! :p

Can't wait to see more of your material in the future...

I enjoyed looking at your work. granted I have seen quite a bit of it browsing through the vastness that is the internet but I decided to investigate deeper only to find you had, quite literally, hundereds of pieces. I enjoyed going over each and every one which, granted, it took me almost two hours to do so.

None the less, you have some great work (regardless of what you might say in your comments on certain pieces) and I look forward to checking back to go over any and all new pieces you've added in the future.

I enjoyed your site. More importantly I enjoyed the art works. Not in the least the Tolkien art. Excellent indeed.
Nice to see that you have self reflection with your work: "what was I thinking when I was drawing this". Brilliant!

Keep up the good work!

Hello,

This site is very nice. The pictures and sketches are brilliant, My favourite sketch is "Roac, Son of Carc" and my favourite picture is "Gandalf falls with the Balrog". Your artwork is an inspiration.

I'm glad about the fact that you created/ made a new book, which is in the stores - in september 😉

Hi John,

I'll be back here often, a real inspiration to look at your work. I am working up a portfolio and I work in similar media to you - seeing the way you render is teaching me so much! I just wish all of your pictures opened to large...

It's so good to see all this stuff in one place, a joy to behold. Long may you paint.

Your work is an inspiration, thank you for sharing it with all of us. Thank you too for your thoughtful and kind replys to all of the "FAQs" I found them most helpful, especially, "how to paint grass and rocks".
I have worked in art for years, and always thought my job was to read minds, not draw pictures. Your comments following the illustrations for book covers seem to agree.
