Mr Howe, thank you for sharing your discoveries about William Timlin. I first got wind of that beautiful Calla Editions' reprint from a mention in one of your previous newsletter, and have since pre-ordered and received the book. It is as beautiful as expected, and I'm so thankful that I found out about it and I got it! Thank you for showcasing Timlin and so many other forgotten artists on your newsletters, ensuring that they are not lost to time.

I read your FAQ post about teaching classes and/or taking on apprenticeships. Mr. Howe, you are a truly humble man, but you're absolutely right in that respect too - how can you teach someone else to paint what is in their own mind and soul? Because it feels very much as though everything you paint is made with every aspect of yourself involved.

Although I must still beseech that next time you're in Australia, you hold a lecture/tutorial in Melbourne. Even if it's just to talk about your own art, or how you feel and connect with/about art, I'd be hanging on to every word.

It's a shame that all the sets on location had to be taken down. I would loved to have visited Edoras most of all.

Hi John. I hope the work is going well on The Hobbit! I'm very much looking forward to seeing some more of your images realised on the big screen. I was in Hungary last year in a book shop and I saw one of your art books. I couldn't help but buy it despite the fact that it was in Hungarian! Sign of good illustrations methinks 😀 Your work to me has forever been synonymous with Tolkien. The very first time I discovered Tolkien was when my father gave me a copy of The Hobbit with your iconic image of Smaug the Magnificent on the cover. Since then, there has been a quality to your work that has always since been Middle-Earth for me. Best of luck with the rest of the production in New Zealand!

You and your work is amazing, would love to see you do a panel at AZ's Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy art convention (www.leprecon.org)

Dear John and the webmaster, i'd rather not to disturb you, but there's a little mistake in cultural origin of the Small Rolling Pea. Actually, it's an Ukranian tale. This story is really strange, while our Russian folk is much more easier, but there is also a dragon - Snake-a-mountin.
Anyway, great job, Mr. Howe, the webmaster.
Best regards.

Mr. John Howe, you are one of my most admired artists because I have had so much of the inspiration for my amateur artwork in Tolkien's literature as well as your fabulous interpretations about it. I have to confess that I'd love to follow your steps and meet you someday or at least watch your artwork in person instead of by the web or on book covers. If you want please take a look at my blog and have my best regards from Colombia, South America...

I really love your work John! I mean, it's amazing! Actually it was you and Alan who made me want to be an artist like you two when I grow up. Keep up the good work!

🙂 Thought it was about time I visited your website.I have a habbit of doing things backwards sometimes
Of cause NOW you realise how I could have missed your newsletter and your Tardisin effort 😉 [bravo] There must be a setting somewhere to receive these ramblings via email. I must have taken a wrong turn somehow [still haven't sorted out my profile or settings]...So I'm in limbo land, in the inbetweens...or ullage if you will, while I wait for the the cork to clunk 😉

Your artwork is absolutely amazing! I shall have to look at it more as reference for a story or two (or three or four, who knows?).

hi Sir I'm a huge fan of your artwork and your middle earth illustration is just outstanding. I' ve done a fanart painting based upon one of your sketches and you can view it in my deviant gallery http://leseraphin.deviantart.com/ Of course if you disagree with it, please let me know and I will have it withdrawn. However thank you very much for your art

I was very much impressed with your sketches of middle earth and especially of the villains. I hope you continue sketching and painting, it being a somewhat passion of mine I would very much enjoy to send you copies of my work. My email is above if you are interested.

My regards,

Mr. Howe,

I am bipolar and have pulled out of a long, deep depression the past year or so. When I was at my worst, one of the things that kept me going was LOTR's. I credit you and Alan Lee for creating the awesome imagery of the film.

Much better now; still a HUGE fan.
