ILLUSTRATORS
This is a delightfully concise introduction to illustration, with over 100 short biographies.
To quote the site: "The list below contains a smattering of some of the most famous illustrators of the last 125 years."
There are links to publications, sites, the text is fun to read; a site done by true enthusiasts.
There's even The Poky Little Puppy. |

Le Donjon de Nahuelbeuk
By default, I've put this here.
It could go in any of the categories.
A few years ago, my son was always raving about a thing called the "Donjon de Naheulbeuk". Not only was it unpronounceable, he couldn't really explain what it was, except that it was excruciatingly funny.
Turns out that it is the product of the slightly twisted and genial mind of John Lang, alias Pen of Chaos. CDs, short stories, music, figurines, comics, a regularly touring live band... and that's only the tip of the iceberg. (It helps if you understand French and don't mind if your tummy hurts from laughing too much, but the instructive 15 minute track on his first CD on how to cut an orc riding a boar out of cardboard is one of my all-time favorites...) |

Lord of the Brush
"Lord of the Brush will take you on a journey to discover John Howe, an artist famous for his illustrations of JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth. The film will take you from the shores of British Columbia to the mountains of Switzerland, from old castles in France to the wilderness of Canada and on to Middle Earth. Through interviews and visuals, it will explain who John Howe is and what he stands for. The movie will focus on John’s vision of life, his art and the world in general."
Wow. Those are not my words, I would not dare write something that eloquent about myself. It was a wonderful experience, though; here's what I had to say about it all:

Reclaiming The Blade
While it's clear that swords are nasty sharp pointy things designed exclusively for poking holes in people when it's not lopping bits off them, they are nonetheless an intergral part of our cultural heritage.
I don't consider myself an expert on anything much, so I was quite surprised when a company called Galatia Films got in touch and asked if I would do a little filmed interview for a production called "Reclaiming the Blade".
"Never!" I cried, "not even if you poke holes in me and lop bits off!"
I didn't really say that, I cautiously replied that it sounded very interesting and made sure I had some clean shirts ironed just in case.
As it turns out, the film is narrated by John Rhys-Davis, and has interviews with all manner of famous people who fiddle around (carefully) with sharp pointy things.
With folks like Peter Johnsson, Bob Anderson, John Waller and others participating, not to mention the likes of the Royal Armouries and the Weta Workshop, it looks like a rich program. |
