The Secret Sharer
1993
I originally did what I thought was a great sketch - a birds-eye view of a sci-fi city where the skyscrapers were shaped like great monolithic Egyptian gods, all lit from below with the streetlights, and ships plying to and fro in the air à la Star Wars Attack of the Clones meets Blade Runner...
It didn't get a favorable reaction.
Undaunted (those were the days) I did what I thought was a great second sketch for the short story of the same name - an ethereal female form reaching through the viewport to touch the forehead of a spaceship pilot encased à la Alien mystery pilot in the tubes, wires and support systems of his cyborg exoskeletal ship. It all looked very Moebius-like and I thought it was a great idea. in return, I got back a thumbnail sketch asking me to put Pizarro HERE, Genghis Khan HERE and Socrates THERE and a planet BEHIND them please and don't argue... Well, bite the buillet, but have you ever tried to draw one of those damn Spanish morions from above? Happily, I was able to indulge in my second favourite theme after horseshoe crabs - rocket-powered angels with pshents...
