Orpheus' Head
Sketch for "Kingdom of Brass"
J. Frank-Lynne
From the bridge, they could see it clearly, despite the slashing rain and scattered rags of fog that clung to the River. Still some distance away, the gleaming juggernaut seemd to ignore the current, a frothing wave parting before it to rock the Ullani tow-barges in their moorings, their hollow hulls echoing on the quays near the Bankments. Two rays of sulphur-tinted light pierced the darkness and an eerie roiling steam rose into the night.
"It'll never clear the bridge!" cried Youssa-Ney, her face lit like an etching in the yellow glare. "We must flee, we must!"
