I loved illustrating this text. Given free rein by the editor, I indulged in pastel full-bleed illustrations throughout. The story takes place in a marshy region of France, and is moody and full of mist and rain. I gathered leaves to paint from, and even pressed them into the paper to make the textures on the cover. I was very proud when I finished.
The author hated it.
The editor forgot to send me copies. I got a couple in a bookshop - on sale - years and years later. Sometimes, illustrating kid's books takes a serious dose of moral fortitude.
