The Walls of Angband, Decorative Border

The 1997 Tolkien Calendar

This painting was done to make Melkor Calls Forth Ungoliantë actually fit the calendar format. The painting of Ungoliante is tall and narrow - hardly an easy format to fit anywhere, so an extra bit was needed to pad it out, and a glimpse of the walls of Angband seemed just the thing. I have a confession to make. There exists a beautiful Art Nouveau frontispiece with a similar wall, but with it's base in the sea and viking ships approaching. It's a striking image, with the top of the ramparts just below the top edge of the picture. I couldn't stop myself from copying the composition, and I hope to find the excuse to do so again sometime.
