Leaving Beleriand

Leaving Beleriand
73.3 x 25.5 cm
1999

Another spontaneously generated title... this painting was designed for the Map of Beleriand published by HarperCollins. The landscape itself, minus the white ships, is more or less the view we had from our temporary home in New Zealand while working on the Lord of the Rings films. (If you could turn to the left, you would see the Jackson's place.) On the other hand, the ships going past were mainly ferries carrying passengers between the North and South Islands, and there were certainly more seagulls than white swans flying around out front. The painting was done in New Zealand, in the spare minutes that the film work did not devour.
By the way, those three swans have become something of a mild obsession, and I've managed to fit them into several pictures. (That's the lovely thing about symbols, they preclude the need for imagination...)
