Monstrous Regiment
This was done for a Discworld calendar, 2005, I think.
I look at it now with wonderment and dismay in equal measure. Wondering HOW I ever got involved in doing a picture like that, and dismayed I actually FINISHED it...
The Pratchett calendar commissions are a bit of a lottery; I drew Monstrous Regiment, which I dutifully read all the way to the end, with ever-growing trepidation and finally complete consternation. Discworld is a facinating universe visually, inventive, rich and fun besides, but this book seemed to have no images in it whatsoever.
It is the story of a ragtag regiment of mismatched species, with a tomboy heroine whose principal preoccupation seems to be stuffing socks down the front of her trousers in order to pass for a man. (Don't ask.)
The only part I can still stomach in this painting is the fortress.
