This is one of those times when you wonder just why you bothered…
I did a HUGE original (it must be about 8 times final print size) in order to stick close to the brief. The cemetry gate, which you can barely see, was to be an all-important symbolic portrayal of the Devil in forged iron, with the pious heroine demurely superimposed. So, supported by my massive file of photos on old walls with ivy, long grass and brambles, a book on ancient Irish churches, a few on metalwork, my favorite book on Scotland (for the moss on the wall) and a decent enough book on costume, I went to work with a will…
It might as well have gone on a postage stamp. I particularly like the tasteful and discrete grid that is no doubt meant to suggest a cathedral window. (Either that, or somebody forgot to erase the layout grid before sending it to the printer’s…)
I never even got a copy of the book. Such a pity. It’s GOT to be better than the cover.
