Back in pre-internet days... Sketches would be photocopied down to a manageable format - preferrably A4 - and the cover copy inked in to make sure things would fit, and then faxed to the editor. (Admittedly, this beat pre-fax days, when sketches would be sent by the post, thus affording exhausted illustrators a few days respite... now we can send the things instantaneously by e-mail... no rest for the wicked.)
