Avalon / The Isle of Apples
Avalon / The Isle of Apples
1984
I slaved for weeks on this painting. (There is just no quick and easy way to draw apple blossoms...) It was to be part of an ambitious series of high-quality poster prints done by an American publisher called Child Graphics.
Alas, the print, when I finally saw it, seemed to have been printed without using any yellow, and looked like it had been in a store window in the sun for months. I doubt very many were sold. (The editor dutifully sent me royalty cheques of about 12 dollars per annum for a while and then I imagine just gave up...) As for the original, it disappeared in the bankruptcy of a place called the Pendragon Gallery in Annapolis. (I actually had quite a nice gallery show there in the mid-eighties, but made the huge error of leaving quite a lot of artwork there to be sold. When financial difficulties arose for the proprietors, I gullibly swallowed all their over-the-phone reassurances and one day they were simply no longer there, having evaporated with a substantial amount of my work. Had I had any sense, I'd have jumped on a plane and raced out there when the danger signs appeared and yanked all my stuff. Too late now.)
