PANTHEON |

When I was a teenager, I literally worshipped six illustrators - demigods in my eyes. Here they are: |

Barry Windsor-Smith
By the time I discovered Barry Smith's Conan, it had undergone the miraculous transformation from a good take on Jack Kirby to a fantastically realized world. Naturally, it was not only too good for a comic, but too good to last, and I spent ages searching for used copies in used-book shops before they were all eventually re-edited.
He was eventually lured back to Robert E. Howard's universe for a few issues of Savage Sword of Conan; his "Red Nails" is the best Conan comic of all time. |

Berni Wrightson
I only caught on to Berni Wrightson's talent when he reached the last issue of Swamp Thing that he would do.
I made up for it by madly buying posters, paperbacks, everything and anything that he turned his hand to, culminating of course with "A Look Back" and "The Studio". |

Michael W. Kaluta
Michael Kaluta was naturally one of the guiding stars of my teenage firmament.
I loved his astonishing detail and line work, and of course, he is the creator of the BEST (and most esoteric and delightfully incomprehensible) comic of all time: Starstruck. |

Roy G. Krenkel
Roy Krenkel's work was on another lofty pedestal, only slightly lower than Frazetta's.
There is no official site, so the link is to Jim Vadeboncoeur's truly excellent Illustrators page.
The best book on Krenkel's work, to my knowledge, is RGK: The Art of Roy G. Krenkel by J. David Spurlock and Barry Klugerman |
