By the time I discovered Barry Smith's Conan, it had undergone the miraculous transformation from a good take on Jack Kirby to a fantastically realized world. Naturally, it was not only too good for a comic, but too good to last, and I spent ages searching for used copies in used-book shops before they were all eventually re-edited.
He was eventually lured back to Robert E. Howard's universe for a few issues of Savage Sword of Conan; his "Red Nails" is the best Conan comic of all time.
